Missed “Mobilegeddon”? Here’s what you need to know

On Tuesday, April 21 2015, Google made a major update to its mobile search algorithm – nicknamed “Mobilegeddon” –  that will change the order in which websites are ranked when users search for something using their phone or tablet device, stating on their Webmaster Central Blog:

“Starting April 21 2015, we will be expanding our use of mobile-friendliness as a ranking signal. This change will affect mobile searches in all languages worldwide and will have a significant impact in our search results. Consequently, users will find it easier to get relevant, high quality search results that are optimized for their devices.”

 

But why the changes?

Well, its really very simple – Google acknowledges that more and more people are using their smartphones and tablets everyday to search for things online. This is of course no secret.

The search engine giant has now taken pity on those of us carrying out mobile searches that are tired of squinting at websites where the “text is too small to read” and struggling to click on “links that are too close together”, amongst other things.

 

So how can I test if my website survived Mobilegeddon?

Don’t worry, Google hasn’t just dropped this on us and left us all to it. The quickest and easiest way to test your website’s “mobile friendliness” is to use Google’s testing tool by simply entering your URL. After a few seconds, you will hopefully be met with a message such as the below:

If this is the case, you don’t need to do anything else – you have survived Mobilegeddon. But what if you get the sinister “Not mobile friendly” message?

Well, firstly – don’t panic! Plenty of websites are currently not making the cut for reasons which are easily fixable, such as; the text is too small to read, the links are too close together or the mobile viewport is not set (the function on your site which determines whether your site will be displayed to fit a desktop screen versus a mobile screen).

 

In plain-English, please!

We realise there is a lot to take in, but the main things to be aware of are;

  1. Your desktop search rankings will almost certainly not change because of Mobilegeddon
  2. Once your website has been changed to become more mobile friendly, it can take from a few hours to a few days for Google to notice these changes. If your website is much larger, this could take slightly longer.
  3. Google will not delist your website if you decide against going mobile-friendly.
  4.  If no changes are made to your site, it is likely to start slipping down Google’s search rankings over the next few weeks to months – but in reality its impossible to know exactly when this will happen.
